The everyday 50 KB limit
50 KB is the most common upper limit for photographs on Indian exam and recruitment forms, bank KYC flows and college portals. It balances small storage with a face that is still easy to recognise.
What the preset does
The tool starts with a 50 KB target and caps the longest side at 1200 pixels, which is plenty for a portrait viewed on screen. It then finds the best JPEG quality that lands within roughly 10% of the target, and shows you before-and-after previews so you can judge the result yourself.
For a better photo
- Use a plain, light background and even light from the front.
- Crop to head and shoulders with Crop image before compressing.
- If the form needs exact pixel dimensions, such as 200 × 230 px, use Resize image first or the Exam photo and signature resizer.
If the result is above 50 KB
Images with lots of fine detail can resist. You will see “Closest achievable” with the real size. Lower the max width/height to 800 px and try again, or switch on WebP if the portal accepts it. Need a smaller file? Try the 20 KB preset; for a little more quality, the 100 KB preset.
Pixel dimensions that fit 50 KB
| Image type | Pixels that usually fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Passport-style photo | 300 × 400 to 600 × 800 px | Plain light background helps |
| KYC selfie / profile photo | 600–800 px longest side | Faces stay clear |
| Document photo | 800–1000 px longest side | Greyscale saves space |
These are starting points, not guarantees: a noisy, detailed photo needs fewer pixels than a plain one at the same KB.
Where 50 KB is used
Photographs on exam and job application forms, KYC selfies, and profile pictures on college and government portals.
