Instagram’s sizes, made simple
Instagram displays posts 1080 pixels wide. Square posts are 1080 × 1080, portrait posts are 1080 × 1350 (4:5), and stories are 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Uploading a photo at a different shape means Instagram crops or pads it for you, often not where you want.
What this preset does
It opens the resizer with the Instagram post size already chosen; you can switch to portrait or story in the preset list. The photo is centre-cropped to the shape and resized with high-quality resampling, so it is ready to post at the exact width Instagram uses.
Which size to pick
- Portrait 1080 × 1350 takes up the most space in the feed – great for people and products.
- Square 1080 × 1080 works for grids and carousels.
- Story 1080 × 1920 for stories, reel covers and WhatsApp status.
Tips
Keep the subject near the centre, since that is the part that stays. For a custom crop, use Crop image with the 1:1 or 9:16 aspect first. Making a profile photo for a passport instead? See Passport size photo.
Instagram size table
| Format | Ratio | Pixels | Preset in the tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Instagram post |
| Portrait post | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | Instagram portrait |
| Tall post (in-app) | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | Instagram tall 3:4 |
| Landscape post | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | Instagram landscape |
| Story / Reel | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Instagram / WhatsApp story |
Instagram’s Help Center says photos between 320 and 1080 px wide keep their resolution when the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4; anything else is cropped, and wider photos are scaled to 1080 px. Scheduling tools that publish through Meta’s API may still cap feed photos at 4:5, so use 1080 × 1350 if you schedule.
Crop or fit?
This resizer crops to fill the frame, which looks best in the feed. If you need the whole picture with bars, place it on a 1080-wide canvas in an editor first.
